TVOS Amateur Winemaking Competition

 

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all members of the Tennessee Viticultural & Oenological Society in good standing, except for the Wine Competition Judges or commercial winemakers.

    Each competitor is required to mail, hand carry or send by Board Member, one 750 ml bottle or two 375 ml bottles of each wine entered to Hillside Winery, 229 Collier Dr., Sevierville, TN 37862 by Wed., January 6, 2010. If you attend the Annual Meeting, please bring a bottle of each wine that you enter in competition to the meeting to share with everyone at the reception. Anyone who wishes to donate a bottle or bottles of wine to TVOS which in turn will be donated to Tammy Algood for TVOS wine promotion across the state may do so. It will be greatly appreciated.

RULES AND DEFINITIONS
READ CAREFULLY

    General: All wine must be produced and bottled by a member of the Tennessee Viticultural and Oenological Society from grapes, grape concentrates, fruit, fruit juice or honey.
    No entrant shall be involved in any way with commercial winemaking or use the facilities of commercial wineries, other than obtaining grapes, juice or concentrates. This is an amateur contest.

    VARIETAL WINES: Wine named by variety must contain at least 75% of the named variety. Wines made from "Vitis Labrusca" grapes, such as Concord must contain a minimum of 51% of the grape variety and it will be stated on the label. If the label contains no percentage statement, the wine must contain at least 75% of the "Labrusca variety".
    Any category having a large number of entries of one variety may be subdivided to make a separate category of that variety. Qualifications for subdivision is at least six (6) entries of one variety in a category with twelve (12) or more total entries.

    BLENDING: Blended wines are to be entered in the category determined by the major component.

    LABELING: Each bottle of wine must be labeled stating name of contestant and other information such as varietal composition, year of harvest, sweet, dry, desert, semi-dry, etc.

    Dry: Not more than 1% residual sugar as measured by Dextrocheck. Wines which in the opinion of the judges, are two sweet for the category will be penalized.

    JUDGING: The Board of Directors will approve the qualifications of judges before each competition. Names of persons considered to have qualifications for being judges are requested and may be submitted at any time.

    FEES: The entry fee will be $8 each entry.

    AWARDS: "Tennessee Appellation Award" will be made for the best amateur wine made from a Tennessee grown product. The purpose and aim for this award is to encourage our amateur winemakers to make the very best wine they can from Tennessee fruits.
    Members from out-of-state have the opportunity to compete for "Best of Class" as these awards are being continued. If these members wish to compete for the "Tennessee Appellation Award" they may "step across the border" and buy some Tennessee fruit.
    If you complete for the "Tennessee Appellation Award", you will be asked who grew the fruit, whether it is yourself or someone else within the state.
    "Best of Class" Awards (two) will be made to the best of sweet and the best dry wine entered in the competition. First place wines in each category will be eligible for those awards only if ----- in the opinion of the judges, these wines have high enough scores to be considered. A combined panel of judges will conduct a separate judging for the "Best of Class" awards.
   

    FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD PLACE AWARDS will be made in each category. Minimum qualifications for places are as follows:
   

    First Place Award _____________________ 16-20 points
    Second Place Awards________________14.5-15.9 points
    Third Place Points____________________ 13-14.4 points
   

    Points will be awarded based on a twenty (20) points scale as approved by the TVOS Board of Directors. If in the judges opinions, wines are not worthy of mention, fewer than three (3) awards may be made in each category.

    EXCEPTIONS: The TVOS Board of Directors may make temporary or permanent exceptions to the regulations.

    All awards will be announced at the banquet.

CATEGORIES

CATEGORY 1 - Red American Dry:   Native or American Hybrid Concord, Steuben, Cynthiana, Muscadine, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 2 - Red American Sweet:   Native or American Hybrid Concord, Steuben, Cynthiana, Muscadine, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 3 - White American Dry:   Native or American Hybrid Niagra, Duchess, Carlos, Magnolia, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 4 - White American Sweet:   Native or American Hybrid Niagra, Duchess, Carlos, Magnolia, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 5 - Red Hybrid Dry:   French Hybrids Chancellor, Chambourcin, Foch, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 6 - Red Hybrid Sweet:   French Hybrids Chancellor, Chambourcin, Foch, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 7 - White Hybrid Dry:   French Hybrids Cayuga, Seyval, Vidal, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 8 - White Hybrid Sweet:   French Hybrids Cayuga, Seyval, Vidal, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 9 - Red Vinifera Dry:   Cabernet, Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 10 - Red Vinifera Sweet:   Cabernet, Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 11 - White Vinifera Dry:   Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 12 - White Vinifera Sweet:   Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, etc. (or blends).

CATEGORY 13 - Grape Rose / Blush:   Color must be appropriate from grape on sweet or dry.

CATEGORY 14 - Fruit Rose / Blush:   Color must be appropriate sweet or dry. Blends should go into the dominate (over 50%) class.

CATEGORY 15 - Non Grape - Fruit:   Apples, Peaches, Pears, etc. Sweetness can vary.

CATEGORY 16 - Non Grape - Berry:   Blackberry, Raspberry, Strawberry, etc. Sweetness can vary.

CATEGORY 17 - Sparkling:   These wines should have a good quality as well as lasting effervescence. Yeasty bouquets are not necessarily a negative characteristic. Sweetness can vary. They can be made from any grape or non-grape products. (Examples: Chardonnay, Apple, Vidal, etc.)

CATEGORY 18 - Fortified Wines:   These wines must have over 14% alcohol per volume. (Examples: Ports, Sherries, Brandys, etc.)
